About PTACC Africa

PTACC Africa was formed in 2023 after meetings with members of African leadership who are involved with strategies for alternatives to incarceration. The work being done there is a solid match for what PTACC advocates for.

Current members are from:

  • Kenya
  • Tanzania
  • Uganda
  • Ghana
  • Botswana
  • South Africa

PTACC Africa is a gathering of stakeholders whose goals are to: discuss what’s working in Deflection, Diversion and all areas of Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI); as well as Prevention, Treatment, and Reintegration initiatives for persons with substance use disorders and in conflict with the law.

PTACC Africa and PTACC International Deflection and Diversion Strategy Area have hosted webinars on:

  • Deflection: Arrest or Support?
  • Juvenile Deflection and Pre-Arrest Diversion
  • The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention

Webinars are held monthly targeting the prevailing issues in the substance use and abuse arena and criminal justice. Speakers who are proficient in their areas- relevant to ATI are welcome to share their expertise.

As PTACC Africa continues to grow, they will organize seminars for policy development on Deflection, Diversion and ATI, host regional summits on Deflection and partner with more civil societies and governments to ensure that no person with a substance use disorder ends up in the criminal justice system; but rather receive support and treatment where necessary.
